- How It All Started
-
- Jack woke up, lifted his headwhich was resting on the table,
- wiped his eyes and glanced at his watch. It was past midnight
- quite a bit, so he was not surpriesed that he was all alone
- in the lab. All normal people slept in their booths, after a
- hard day's work.
- Having glanced at his notes, he came to the conclusion that
- there was no point trying to convince himself that he wishes
- to continue his hard work. At this moment in time he olny
- wanted one thing - to get to bed as fast as possible.
-
- Slowly, so as not to wake up completely, he began to switch
- off the instruments in the laboratory. The room was gradually
- filling with silence. After a while, all that was audible was
- only the low hum of the ventilation. For a moment he wondered
- why the design engineers who constructed space and planetary
- bases did not try to eliminate this sound. It may well be that
- they did not wishes the users of those stations to feel
- completely isolated. Maybe the low hum was to imitate the
- noise of an earthly city.
-
- Suddenly and completely unexpectedly even this delicate sound
- became silenced. Jack knit his brows and lifted them in
- surprise. Here, at the station, a breakdown of the ventilation
- system could and should be a cause of anxiety. He listened
- carefully to the silence that sorrounded him. He expected the
- emergency ventilation to start any minute. It should in fact
- start operating the minute the other system broke down.
- The fact that the security systems behaved so strangely did not
- arouse his fear; he had confidence in the modern instruments
- that surrounded him. Yet, he was a little surprised that modern
- technology which so much depended on, suddenly failed. Most
- probably, warning notices have already appeared on the monitors
- in the control rooms. Alarm signals must have already sounded.
- At least I am not the only one who is not asleep - he thought
- to himself and smiled.
-
- He sat down at his desk once again and reached for the commu-
- nicator. he dialled the code of the control station. After a
- while, somebody's angry face appeared on the small screen.
- Before he managed to open his mouth, he heard:
- "It's no time for asking questions. We have some serious
- problems here!" and the monitor switched itself off.
- At this moment he realized that the breakdown must be a serious
- one. For a while he wondered which of his colleagues he should
- wake up and inform about these interesting events. As he could
- not decide on any of them, he thought of his wife. He punched
- in the code and waited. The response was quicker than expected.
- He read the notice: "Connection impossible due to breakdown of
- internal communications system".
- By now his desire to sleep has abandoned him entirely. He made
- for the door, opened it and went out into the corridor. Another
- surprise awaited him there.
-
- In the corridor it was dark. Even the emergency lights were not
- on. He made his way into the darkness, in the direction of the
- elevator. He fumbled for the call button but nothing happened.
- He tried once again to fetch the elevator, all to no effect.
- The elevator control light did not go on. Becoming more and
- more distrustful of the failig technology, Jack put his ear to
- the door. Silence confirmed his worst expectations - fewer and
- fewer intruments seemed to be working that night.
- The sudden and unexpected turn of events required decisive
- action. He decided to make his way to the residential part of
- the station , as he was becoming more and more anxious about
- his family who he thought were all asleep. Reaching the resi-
- dental level meant having to use the emergency staircase
- which probably has not been in use since the very construction
- of the station. He looked into some drawers and cupboards
- looking for a flashlight. Eventually, from under a pile of notes
- he fished out a flashlight belonging to his son. At one time, he
- took it away from him as punishment for reading books unter the
- quilt. Having checked that the flashlight was in working order,
- he set out into the dark corridor.
-
- The door to the emergency staircase was traditional, without any
- electric, compressed-air, or hydraulic assistence. Opening it
- required only unlocking and applying considerable strength to
- slide it open.
- The beam of the flashlight lit up the space behind the door and
- it turned out that the stairs were really there. He began his
- upward climb. The clutter of his shoes resounded with a loud
- echo throughtout the staircase. He felt a little uneasy. The
- stairs were covered with a thin layer of dust which soared up
- into the air and irked his nostrils accustomed to the sterile air
- in the remaining part of the base. He was not aware of how many
- landings he had to climb to reach the next level, as he was never
- interested in the construction details of the equipment he used,
- nor of the rooms he stayed in. When he directed his flashlight
- upwards, the beam disappeared into the darkness.
-
- Suddenly a strange noise coming from the ventilation hatches and
- resounding in the entire emergency staircase, drew his attention.
- He was able to hear the distant echoes of the alarm signals, as
- well as the muffled sounds of collisions and explosions. Urged
- on by these disquieting sounds, he raced upstairs.
- Having passed a few landings he arrived at a door leading to the
- next storey. Behind them, there should be storerooms. The noise
- which a soldier would no doubt identify as the sounds of battle,
- could still be heard in the emergency staircase. He pushed back
- the bolts and slid the door open.
- At the storeroom level the corridor was no longer swathed in com-
- plete darkness. The murk was lit up slightly by the switched on
- emergency lights. It was clearly and quieter. He looked around and
- noticed a communicator on the wall. When he approached it, the
- screen lit up and he was able to read the notice: "Red alarm -
- immediate evacuation of the entire personnel".
- Through the open door he could hear the noise which was now growing
- louder. Somebody was running down the stairs. In a moment, a man
- whose clothes clearly indicated that he belonged on the military
- section of the personnel, appeared in the corridor.
-
- The soldier stopped abruptly and looked at Jack with an expression
- of surprise. Jack now recognized Jim, an old acquaintance from
- military service. In his hands, Jim was clutching a fire arm
- which turn out to be a good-sized flame thrower. He pointed it
- straight into Jack's insides. Having seen this motion, as well as
- the expression on the soldier's face, Jack went completly numb.
- He slowly streched out his hands hoping that this gestrure might
- calm the opponent. Jim now remebered his old friend.
- "What are you doing here?" - he asked in a surprised tone of voice.
- "I thought nobody was around downstairs at this time of night."
- "Don't ask stupid questiones" - replied Jack. "I am trying to get
- upstairs. What's going on there? Nothing works, there is no com-
- munications, no ventilation. Can you enlighten me a bit?"
- "You won't believe it but we have just been invaded by the bloody
- aliens" - answered Jim in a way which was rather characteristic of
- him. "They cut through our defences and took control over half of
- the installations. Then, they barged in and just now they are
- clearing the premises".
- "What about the rest of the crew?"
- "Well, one could say they fought heroically though briefly against
- the prevailing enemy forces. I'll venture to say that I am the
- only one who managed to get away."
- "What about the civilians?" asked Jack, thinking about his
- family. "I must get to them as quickly as possible".
- "Forget about them" replied Jim, feeling his firearm with his
- hands. "They have dealt with the residential level very effectivly.
- They simply unsealed it and its stopped being air-tight. Nobody
- survived. The only ones that remained alive were those who were
- either higher or lower, like us. I suspect that those upstairs
- have already been exterminated, thus it is only us who remain."
- "I'm going there" said Jack and made for the emergency staircase.
- Jim's reaction was violent and decisive. He overtook Jack, and
- stood in his way with his weapon targeted at his belly.
- "You are not going anywhere, old pal. I tried to get to this level
- myself but the emergency exit is blocked by a security system
- activated by the breach of air-tightness. Besides, the aliens
- are already on the level immediately above us and I don't intend
- to wait for them here. Neither will I allow you to do so".
- "My wife and my son are there" - replied Jack through clenched
- teeth. "I must get there and you will not stand in my way".
- Feigning resignation Jack tried to divert Jim's attention and
- knock him down with one powerful punch, like he had seen it
- done in the movies. Yet, the moment he moved his arm, the soldier
- seized it and put the end of the flame-thrower to his forehead.
- "Don't even think about it! I am really and truly sorry, pal" said
- Jim putting down the weapon. "Now we have to think about ourselves.
- They will be here any minute and we won't be waiting for them here.
- Take a grip of yourself, we will despair afterwards. I have also
- lost a lot of people who were really close to me. However, now
- it's time to act".
-
- From the corridor one could hear the hum of the sliding elevator
- door. Right behind them, there appeared something which looked
- like a self-propelled robot. Without hesitation, Jim fired from
- the thrower in the direction of the robot which was moving steadily
- in their direction. The shot was not well-targeted but a flame burst
- out from the wall and the remains of the construction crumbled to
- the floor which confused the opponent. Jim fired once again, this
- time more accurately, hitting the robot right in the middle. The
- explosion was so strong, that they were both thrown to the floor
- and covered with the debris of the machine.
- The anti-fire installation became activated. Jim rose to his feet
- quickly and helped Jack get up. He led him in the direction of
- the emergency staircase.
- "Let's get out of here, fast" he cried. "Now they know that somebody
- is here and they'll be trying to eliminate us. Please allow me to
- take the initiative".
- They rushed into the emergency staircase. Jim slid the door shut and
- fired a shot at close range, melting the lock in the door. They were
- safe in case the opponent tried to breach the air-tightness of this
- level. He gave Jack a push downwards and they started tearing down the
- stairs. In a moment, they passed the level of the laboratories bolting
- the emergency door behind them.
- "Where are we running?" asked Jack still trying to catch his breath.
- "To the hangars" cried Jim over his shoulder. "I intend to escape
- from this planet and for this we need a space-ship. We'll destroy
- their controls over the hangers and the airstrip and try to escape
- to outer space".
-
- In a moment, the door to the hangars appeared right in front of them.
- There was no problem opening it, as the level was air-tight. Leaving
- the corridor, Jim led the way to the control rooms. Once there, he
- completed his act of destruction burning all the cables and instruments
- with the help of the flame-thrower.
- "What are you doing?" asked Jack.
- "These are instruments for controlling the hangars. All I wish is to
- make it impossible for them to control our actions. Now look around
- for some space suits for us, as I intend to open the gate with on-board
- waepons."
- He set out in the direction of a sizable spaceship which stood opposite a
- huge gate leading to the airstrip. He opened the sluice and stepped on
- board. Jack made for the stands with the spacesuits but was called back
- with a cry from the spaceship.
- "Come back! we don't need them. This spaceship has sufficient protection to
- enable us to fight in the vacuum and hostile surroundings. Get on board".
- "Can you fly it?" asked Jack having sat down in the seat of the second
- pilot.
- "I was trained on a similar model. I hope I will be able to cope with it.
- But I'll need your help. As soon as we start moving, you'll have to clear
- the way for us with a volley from the on-board canons".
- Jim brought the ship to life very effectively. The screens lit up. A
- weapons' controll pulpit appeared in front of Jack. Before he had time to
- protest, Jim established all the necessary parameters and a plain targeting
- cross appeared on the screen.
-
- "You must pull the trigger when the distance from the gate is shorter than
- 20. The dustance gauge is to be found in the right upper corner. If you
- fire to quickly, the beam will be too wide and powerful; it may destroy the
- support walls and bring down half the station right onto our heads. I won't
- be able to help you as we'll be flying in manual which requires great
- concentration in these conditions. Aim at the very center of the door and
- then fire away, once we are close enough.
-
- They could feel a change in the air pressure accompanying the closing and
- sealing-off of the entrance sluice. Soon afterwards, the cabin was filled
- with the noise of the engines. The ship rose above the level of the floor
- and slowly turned towards the gate of the airstrip. Jim made a sign of
- approval and they began to move in this direction. The volley from on
- on-board weapons was fired at the right moment. A tremendous explosion
- burst the gate open. The field of vision became obilerated with smoke and
- pieces of shrapnel which flew in all directios. Immediately, the monitors
- converted the real-life picture into its computer counterpart which was
- devoid of the elements obstructing vision. The ship's protective fields
- destroyed and cast off shells and shrapnel. Jim made the ship move fastwer
- and adjusted its course, touching but slightly what remained of the gate.
- They found themselves in the exit passageway. The moment the space was
- clear, the ship steered by an apt hand, headed for the stars with
- tremendous speed. The acceleration was so collosal that despite the
- operation of compensational systems, both passeangers lost consciousness.
- Having recovered conscioisness, Jim checked the space around them; nobody
- chased them. Clearly this fact made him very happy and he manifested it
- with a loud shout. He programmed the course and switched on the bearings
- signals. The he unfastened the belts which held Jack in his seat and
- carried him to the hibernation cabin. there, he prepared them both to the
- long wait for a rescue mission.
-
- After thirteen months, their course and bearings were traced by a patrol
- ship which transported them to the first civilized planet. Here their ways
- parted. Jack had undergone long treatment, and Jim became promoted and was
- transfereed to Earth.
-
- Having cured his body and soul, Jack realized his insurance policies and
- decided to spend the money which he obtained in this way on one thing -
- revenge. He augmented his financial resources in various ways, sometimes
- pulling off some underhanded deals. When he concluded that he had amassed
- enough cash to realize his objectives, he turned up on a planet which was
- well-known as Xepton, offering the best possible military instruction.
- He had undergone a few risky and costly operations whose aim was to
- transform him into a kind of superman; a cyborg. Thanks to special devices
- built into his body, he became extremely strong and agile. His senses had
- also been improved. Despite his not being very young, he could easily
- defeat many of his younger opponents. Thanks to some hypnotic training, he
- became well-equipped for the struggle with the Aliens. He acquired only
- such weapons and equipment as to which the intelligence service was certain
- that they would not would not be short of energy on the premises of the
- conquered station.
- The army had secured his safe passage into the vicinity of the base.
- Afterwards, he had to descend along a special tunnel to a lower, technical
- level. There, he was left to his own resources. He managed to negotiate the
- condition that once he defeats all the Aliens and escapes unscathed form
- their ambushes, the troops will yet again come to his aid and help him take
- control of the station. Until he fulfilles this task, he can count only on
- himself.
- He set out to his first mission...
